The genus of Houttuynia has but one species and is native to Asia. This hardy deciduous perennial plant dies back to the ground annually and flourishes in a variety of soils, where it can become invasive. Houttuynia is often planted around ponds as it tolerates boggy soils and is appreciated for its spreading habit and heart shaped colourful foliage.
