A tough and popular garden shrub, Deutzia will grow in any reasonable garden soil, including clays, in full or part sun. When pruning reduce young growth encourage compact growth, prune to shape. For older bushes removing 1/3 of the oldest / weakest wood to ground and mulch with compost occasionally.
