A genus of about 100 species of fast growing, tough shrubs and small trees that are native to Africa, Asia and the Americas. Buddleja flourishes in full sun on dry impoverished soils and will quickly establish to a large shrub. The species alternifolia is the commonest in cultivation, having medium sized lance shaped opposite leaves and masses of mid summer blossom in long slightly pendulus bunches born on long arching stems.
