Shrubs with scented blossom for mixed borders, wall planting and as specimen plants

A number of flowering trees and shrubs also offer the added bonus of providing scent for passers by. When planting scented trees and shrubs it is always worth bearing in mind location of planting as garden users need to get relatively close to a plant before its scent can be appreciated. Locating a scented plant in a sheltered spot near a window, or better still near a frequently used door, where it can really be appreciated.

Think about timing, as some of these shrubs (most notably the Viburnum, shrubby honeysuckle and witch Hazel) give off a delicious scent at the darkest depths of winter, so best plant them near the house or garden path where they can be appreciated. Also bear in mind that for summer flowering shrubs scent is usually stronger during the evening as scented flowering plants are often pollinated by night flying moths and insects.
