Herbaceous flowering plants and herbs with scented blossom

Scented flowering herbaceous plants seem to be rather thin on the ground. Yet those we have offer the added bonus of providing scent for passers by as an added bonus, over and above the show of summer blossom. In order to bulk out this list to a reliable ten plants I have taken the liberty of adding some scented herbs such as catmint, which mixes in well with herbaceous planting and acts very much like your usual herbaceous flowering plant.

It is always worth bearing in mind location when planting scented herbaceous plants, as garden users need to get relatively close to a plant before its scent can be appreciated. Locating a scented herbaceous flowering plant at the front of a bed or near a path is a good idea. Also planting in a pot or bed surrounding a much used patio area is a good idea, as again this is where scent can be most appreciated.

Scent always seems to be stronger in the evening so plant in areas near a patio area where you might sit in the evening. Always give scented plants a decent watering and maybe the odd liquid feed; after all a well nourished plant will often produce more blossom and have an extended flowering period, which in turn means more scent.
