Eucalyptus (commonly known as the Gum tree) is a genus of fast growing evergreen small - very large trees that are native to Australia and the immediate pacific region. A limited number of these fast growing often aggressive trees are hardy in the UK where they are appreciated for their ability to establish quickly and add a sub tropical feel to a garden. Eucalypus is often best pollarded to avoid excessive growth both to restrict growth and also to encourage attractive juvenile foliage. Containerisation is one way of restricting the aggressive root run of these vigorous trees.
