Ceanothus is genus of evergreen and deciduous shrubs which are commonly know as Californian Lilac, which gives a clue as to their native lands, as all the 55 species can be found within the mid and north Americas. The growth habit of Ceanothus can be either spreading lowish growing ground cover or upright fast growing shrubs. They flourish in a sunny dry spot and are well suited to planting on chalky or sandy dry soils. Ceanothus produces masses of blue blossom in early summer and many have a great form and attractive dark shiny foliage. They are fast growing and short lived and have a habit of suddenly dying for no apparent reason.
