This fast growing native medium sized tree, with its graceful columnular form is ideally suited to informal planting. With its distinctive white bark and fine weeping twigs birch also provides excellent winter interest.

Birch will grow on a variety of soils from dry sandy soils to heavy clays. Birch is especially tolerant of free draining sandy soils, and is fully hardy. Birch will not tolerate is heavy shade, being a woodland edge tree.
