This tall Osmanthus makes a good, if slow growing alternative to an ornamental holly, with attractive cream white evergreen foliage. Good at the back of a large mixed border where it can provide height and some winter interest with attractive variegated foliage, or as an ornamental addition to a woodland garden. The additional interest of scented autumn blossom is also a bonus.
Osmanthus heterophyllus - Cultivation Notes
This larger Osmanthus shrub may be slow growing but it will eventually grow up to become a small tree, so ideally plant towards the back of a border where it has the space it requires. Osmanthus is generally hardy, however avoid planting in very exposed or hot dry areas, preferring a moist fertile soil in a sheltered spot; this variety is especially well suited to planting in larger gardens in an informal woodland setting. Trim to shape as necessary and mulch with compost every few years to feed.
