Herbaceous plants that will tolerate wet and occasionally water logged soil

A range of flowering herbaceous plants and ferns will be quite happy on permanently wet and waterlogged soils – often as pond or river edge plantings - in fact many will positively flourish on such soils and bog areas can be created to grow these very attractive plants, many of which have large attractive foliage as well as produce attractive displays of summer blossom.

Many of these plants will also prefer a certain amount of shade and shelter as they have large sensitive foliage which could be prone to sun and wind damage. Most will require a deep fertile soil, which should be topped every couple of years with a mulch of well rotted compost. Some of the taller plants might also need staking prior to flowering and
All will require irrigation if your bog area dries out during hot dry summer months.
