Drought tolerant herbaceous plants for dry soils in full sun

Here are a cross section range of tough herbaceous summer flowering plants that will put up with dry exposed planting conditions and sandy, dry or drought impacted and often infertile soils.

Many of these plants have tough or succulent moisture retentive foliage, or silvery foliage which has water conserving hairs, protecting the plant against drought.

If you are planting in an exposed position it is always sensible to stake and tie taller flowering herbaceous plants, also always improve infertile dry sandy or chalky impoverished soils by digging in plenty of planting compost and fertilizer into the planting pit to give the young plant a good start.
